History and Basic Information Adjacent to the Lake Biwako Cultural Park and surrounded by rich forests, the Seta Campus was established in 1989 as one of the projects planned to coincide with the 350th anniversary of the foundation of Ryukoku University. To realize the goal of creating “interdisciplinary faculties open to local communities”, being promoted by the government at the time, Ryukoku University established the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Sociology in Seta and became the first comprehensive university founded by a Buddhist organization in Japan to have faculties covering both the sciences and humanities. Later, the Faculty of Intercultural Communication as well as the Ryukoku Extension Center (REC)* were established, to contribute both to the world and the local community respectively. *REC is the base for collaboration between the University and local industries. It provides local people with opportunities to take open courses on campus and allows small businesses and venture companies to develop new technologies and promote their research activities.
