He is currently serving as the Chair of the SDGs Management Forum in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Vice Chair of the National SDG Platform of Cabinet Office. Shigeki is a designer and researcher, who focuses on human-centered design. He has served as the art director for “Hakuhodo.co,Inc”, Japan's second-largest advertising company, since 1987; his notable works include designing prospective stores for UFJ Bank at the Aichi Expo and developing vehicular communication which centres universal design principles for Toyota Motor Corporation. He has also designed stores for NTT DoCoMo, Japan's largest cell phone company, focusing on improving accessibility for people with disabilities. Utilising his expertise in human-centered design, he has also designed hospitals and facilities to cater to the needs of the elderly. The quality and impact of Shigeki’s works have been recognized by numerous awards such as the Good Design Award, which acknowledges a significant, holistic contribution to the discipline of design. From 2006, he conducted research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Human-Centered Design Institute in the United States, with a focus on accessible design. His research involved developing designs that accommodated the needs of those with impaired vision and developing closed captioning for the hearing-impaired. In 2009, he obtained his PhD at Kyushu University in Japan, focusing on Universal Service. In 2010, he became the founder and director of Hakuhodo Diversity Design, an organization dedicated to researching and developing designs for a diverse population, in particular, the elderly, disabled, and impoverished. Through collaborating with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and various Japanese corporations, he has also developed hygiene products for impoverished communities in Indonesia as well as nutritional beverages for India. At the University of Tokyo, he was involved in “BOKO design program”, which is an innovative design program targetting employees of major Japanese multinational corporations such as Honda. In 2017, he became a professor at the Graduate School of Kyushu University. From the following year, he served as the head of their SDGs design unit, leading projects to address social issues with Japanese companies and students through design. In 2019, he launched the International SDGs Award by collaborating with various partner universities, an award open to applications for students worldwide. His more recent works include working with Kao Corporation to implement a waste reduction program for impoverished communities in India. Through collaborating with the faculty of Agriculture at Kyushu University, he has also developed biodegradable clothing using nanocellulose as well as plastic alternative containers. To contribute to his community in Fukuoka, Shigeki has conducted research with local governments to address depopulation in Itoshima (Fukuoka Prefecture), through design. In 2021, he was responsible for overseeing the production of SDGs Village, which aims to sustainably repurpose timber waste and other materials. He has also created "Future Earth School," which hosts design workshops for children to connect with nature, as well as holding music concerts that teach the importance of life. Shigeki believes his life mission is to address pressing social and environmental issues through design.
