Kimihiro Yasaka, a pianist living in Montreal, Canada, will be invited to perform works by Canadian-born, Kyushu University Assistant Professor of Composition Daryl Jamieson. ‘Goto Archipelago’, the keyword of this year’s event, has been designated as a World Heritage Site and has also developed its own unique culture. Historically, it is not only the departure point of Japanese envoys, including Shingon Buddhist founder Kukai, to China, but is also a very unusual land historically and musically, with ruins remaining from the Neolithic Jomon period, natural sounds unique to the Goto archipelago, and ‘orasho’ chant preserved by the hidden Christian communities. In this concert, Yasaka will perform ‘Goto (Archipelago)’, an immersive new work by Jamieson for piano, audio and video, based on sound and video recorded in Goto over the past year. This performance will be the first time the piece has been performed in Fukuoka. This is a very rare opportunity, so don’t miss it. The concert will be followed by an aftertalk with Yoichi Kamimura, Kimihiro Yasaka, Daryl Jamieson, and moderated by Associate Professor Kazuhiro Jo Series Concept: This year's concert series 'Music and the Non-Human' is part of a three-year research project that draws on Japanese philosophy and aesthetics rooted in premodern, non-Western ontology to interpret the relationship between human and non-human sounds from a new perspective. The composers explore their relationship with nature and spiritual elements, drawing inspiration from pre-modern philosophy and nō theatre. Inspiration from nature, field recordings and contemporary music with traditional instruments intersect to define meaningful ways of creating, listening to, sharing (and discussing) music in unstable times.
